For the completion of my BFA degree, I created an intensive, semester-ling project based around the idea of the ways fear arises, and what causes it to permeate our culture. The culmination of the project was a gallery show in the Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture, and Design (December 2013).
In each of the six projects, I delved into a topic related to the subject of fear in modern culture, consisting of the following:
- Close to home: How temporal region and landscape features may influence Google search terms related to our fears
- Local Legends: The ability of folk legends to stand the test of time based on their location
- Crossing Over: Why the creatures that tap into more of our basic fears most have the ability to scare us the most
- Feeling the Rush: A deeper look into the areas of the brain associated with fear response
- Monsters in Film: A review of the way horror films fall into categories based on common anxiety producing topics
- Why We Watch: An examination of the feelings we receive from viewing scary films.
I wanted the final product to be a blend of computer-based and classic techniques. Unique design elements created for this project included tea stained paper backgrounds, an exclusive title font, and hand-drawn illustrations.
